On Thursday night, a tragic accident claimed the lives of Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. The brothers were cycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, near their hometown of Salem County, when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver. The heartbreaking incident occurred just one day before they were set to be groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding, scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.
Sean Higgins, 43 is charged in the deaths of Gaudreau, 31, and his younger brother Matthew, 29 and made his first appearance Friday afternoon in Salem County Court, where he was ordered to be heid behind bars until his next detention hearing on Sept. 5.

At Boston College, Matthew Gaudreau contributed 16 goals and 47 assists across 119 games as a winger. Matthew played in 127 career ECHL games with the Railers and then the Reading Royals from 2017 to 2022, accumulating 100 points (35 goals and 65 assists) and also added five points (one goal, four assists) in 22 career American Hockey League games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Stockton Heat.
