Who is Matjaz Kek?
Matjaz Kek is a football manager for the Slovenian team who was born on September 9, 1961, in Maribor, People’s Republic of Slovenia, FPR Yugoslavia. The former player who played as a defender stands 1.84 m (6 ft 0 in) tall.
Matjaz Kek has been leading Slovenia’s team since November 2018, and earns an annual salary of £253,000 making him the fourth worst-paid manager at Euro 2024.
Matjaz Kek’s career so far
Matjaz Kek has two Slovenian league championships as a manager, with Maribor. He began his professional career with his hometown team, NK Maribor, and later transferred to Zeleznicar Maribor, another Maribor-based team.
He made his debut in 1985 and played three seasons with the Austrian team Spittal/Drau. Kek then relocated to GAK of the Austrian Bundesliga, where he played for seven years.
After that, he went back to Maribor and retired after winning three Slovenian league titles there from 1995 to 1999.
Kek stayed with Maribor after his playing career ended and worked as an assistant manager there for a season. He was appointed manager in March 2000 replacing Bojan Prasnikar, immediately winning the league trophy. A few weeks later, he was elevated to assistant manager.
