The electoral base of Masoud Pezeshkian consisted primarily of young people and members of the urban middle class, a group demoralized by years of security crackdowns that muzzled public criticism and helped him win the president.

69 year old Masoud Pezeshkian who is a Muslim by religion was born on September 29, 1954 in the Kurdish-populated city of Mahabad in West Azerbaijan to an Iranian mother and an Iranian Azerbaijani father who was born in Qasr-e Shirin.

After earning his diploma in 1973, he relocated to Zabol to fulfil his military obligation. It was in this period that he developed an interest in medicine. He went back to his native province after serving his time, enrolled in medical school, and eventually earned a degree in general medicine.

In addition to serving as a warrior and doctor, Pezeshkian was in charge of dispatching medical teams to the front lines during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988). After completing his general practitioner program in 1985, Pezeshkian began instructing in physiology at the medical college.

He graduated from Iran University of Medical Sciences with a specialized in cardiac surgery in 1993.

Pezeshkian’s wife worked there as a gynaecologist. Pezeshkian lost his wife and one child in an automobile accident in 1994. He never got married again and raised his two surviving sons and daughter on his alone.

Zahra Pezeshkian, his daughter, worked at Jam Petrochemical prior to the Rouhani government taking office. She holds a master’s degree in chemistry from Sharif University of Technology.

Masoud Pezeshkian career

Masoud Pezeshkian’s political career started in 1997 when he was appointed Deputy Health Minister in the government of Mohammad Khatami. Four years later, in 2001, he was named Health Minister and served in that capacity until 2005.

Since then, he has been elected five times to represent Tabriz in the Iranian parliament. From 2016 until 2020, he held the position of First Deputy Speaker of the parliament.

After defeating Saeed Jalili with 16.3 million votes (53.7%) to 13.5 million (44.3%) in the July 5 run-off of the 2024 Iranian presidential election, Pezeshkian was sworn in as president of Iran on July 6, 2024.

Pezeshkian is a reciter of the Nahj al-balagha, a sacred text for Shia Muslims, and a teacher of the Quran. In addition, he belongs to the Iran-Turkey Friendship Society.
