Mark Lajal is an upcoming Estonian professional tennis player who was born on May 12, 2003 in Tallinn, Estonia. Lajal currently has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 191, which he achieved on November 20, 2023. Lajal is a right-handed player and comes from a family with a background in motorsports.

His father, Mart, was a famous motocross racer while his grandfather was a rally driver.  Unlike his father, Lajal’s mother, Merilyn, was not a big fan of motocross races and encouraged Lajal to play tennis. Notably, Lajal left his home in the Estonian capital of Tallinn at the age of 15 to train at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy.

Career

Mark Lajal started off his tennis journey in the junior ITF circuit, where he had a career-high ranking of 13. Following a successful junior circuit career, he made his senior ITF event debut in August 2021. The following year, he won three titles on the ITF circuit, including a massive 25k USD prize in Monastir. By 2022, Lajal made his debut in the ATP Challenger Tour in Vilnius, Lithuania. He qualified for the main draw before eventually losing out in the second round.

Just one year later in 2023, Lajal made his debut final in Little Rock, Arkansas where he defeated Kazakhstan’s Beibit Zhukayev with a score of 6-4, 7-5 to lift the title. In doing so, he became just the second-ever man from Estonia to win a title at this level ever-since Zopp.

The 21-year-old then made his Tour-level debut last year after winning a main-draw wildcard for the European Open.  Lajal is all set to become the first Estonian man ever-since Zopp in the French Open, 2018, to feature in the main draw of a Slam. Moreover, he will also set the same record at Wimbledon, where Zopp played in 2014.
