Mark Carens biography and age

Mark Carens is a professional caddie who was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Carens fell in love with golf as a teenager, particularly during their family trips to iconic courses in Ireland and Scotland. Mark competed professionally and even claimed victories at the Boston Open in 1993 and 1995. He eventually retired from playing competitively around the year 2000 aged 30, and started his reputation as a world-class caddie.

Carens began playing golf at the start of his teenage years later going on two incredible trips with his father to play some of Ireland’s best courses and Scotland’s best courses in back-to-back years.

Carens went on to turn pro out of high school and won both the 1993 and 1995 Boston Open and while his DOB isn’t known, he is aged between 50-60 years.

Career

Mark Carens started out his career as a caddy on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2002 and eventually worked his way onto the PGA Tour. Over the years, he has served as the caddy for several top-tier pros, including Aaron Baddeley, Bubba Watson (notably during the 2010 PGA Championship), Si Woo Kim (2017 Players Championship winner), Brendon Todd, Morgan Hoffmann, and Jonathan Byrd.

Later in April 2021, Carens finally joined JJ Spaun as his caddie and found success together with a win at the 2022 Valero Texas Open. The pair has since gone on to achieve success on several occasions. Mark Carens most recently played an important role during Spaun’s win at the 2025 Players Championship. There was a notable moment in the competition when Carens urged Spaun to “stay in the moment,” helping him push Rory McIlroy into a playoff.

Salary and earnings

Notably, JJ Spaun earned a $4.3 million prize for winning the 2025 U.S. Open, out of which Mark Carens earned a 10% cut, which amounts to $430,000. The amount comes on top of his base salary and year-round performance bonuses. Although his current earnings are unknown, Carens reportedly made over $274,800 in 2023, which included a $120,000 base and $154,800 in performance earnings. As a result, Carens will most likely earn a much higher amount following Spaun’s major win.
