Maria Herranz Gomez passes away

Spaniard gymnast Maria Herranz Gomez passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning, April 18, 2024 at a hospital in the city of Guadalajara. Following her tragic death, town hall chiefs in the nearby town of Cabanillas del Campo confirmed the news stating:

Maria has left us suddenly due to a terrible meningitis that has taken her in just 24 hours, leaving the town in a state of inconsolable sadness.

Cabanillas del Campo town hall wishes to express its deep pain over this tragic circumstance and sends its most sincere condolences to Maria’s family and friends.

The statement further wished condolences to her family members and ended with the statement: “Rest in peace Maria. We will remember you always.”

Cause of death

Maria Herranz Gomez passed away after suffering from meningitis. Meningitis is reportedly an infection and inflammation of the fluid and membranes called meninges, that surround the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of this Meningitis include headache, fever, and a stiff neck and while most people recover from it, some people suffer permanent disabilities like brain damage, hearing loss, and learning disabilities. People who die from the infection can end up dying in just a matter of a few hours.

Maria Herranz Gomez was an upcoming teenage Spanish gymnast who hails from Cabanillas del Campo, a small town in Spain. The teenager was recently passed away on April 18, 2024. She was just 17 years old during the time of her death.  Gomez was born to parents Raquel and Alfonso, and she had a younger brother.

Maria was notably one of nearly 1,000 gymnasts from over 40 counties who competed at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, which took place from November 9–19. The event served as the primary qualification event for the Olympic discipline of Trampoline at the upcoming 2024 Paris Games. Gomez represented Spain in the synchronised trampoline competition in the 17–21 age group.

Tributes and mourning

Following the teenager’s tragic death, the town of Cabanillas del Campo has declared two days of mourning, with flags on council buildings in the town all flying at half-mast. Fans and well-wishers have come out on social media to post tributes for Maria:
