Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. was shot and killed on Tuesday night inside an apartment complex in Hattiesburg, according to a coroner’s report.
The youngster’s body was taken to a medical examiner for an autopsy, according to press reports citing Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem.

Among the first people to arrive at the scene of the gunfire were Southern Miss coach Will Hall and other university representatives, as reported by WDAM-TV.
Meanwhile, the University released a statement which read, “The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus.”
It further said, “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
Authorities said on Wednesday that they had not yet released a possible explanation or named a suspect. The Hattiesburg Police asked anyone with additional information to come forward.

Who was Marcus Daniels Jr?
Marcus ‘MJ’ Daniels Jr was an American football player who played as a defensive back at Southern Mississippi last season was a player for Golden Eagles now. He was just 21 years old at the time of his death.
Throughout 12 games, he recorded 29 tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions (3). The starting cornerback for Southern Miss was 6-foot-2, 195-pound.
For the 2024 season, the senior shifted to safety and was anticipated to return to the starting lineup, according to the Hattiesburg American.
Prior to transferring to Southern Miss in 2023, Daniels spent his first two years of college at Mississippi. He was a star at George County High School before.
After leaving the University of Mississippi, the former player from George County High School joined the Golden Eagles as a cornerback.
The university and its athletic department announced in a statement on Wednesday that counselling will be available to football team players and others affected by his passing.
