Ecuadorian footballer Marco Angulo, aged 22, has tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a car crash, as confirmed by the Ecuadorian FA on Tuesday. The accident also claimed the life of Roberto Cabezas, Angulo’s former youth teammate, the association shared. Angulo, who was on loan to Ecuadorian league champions LDU Quito from FC Cincinnati, was a passenger in a car that collided with a metal barrier on the Rumiñahui highway near Quito on October 7.

The Ecuadorian player from Liga de Quito, Marco Angulo, who suffered a severe car accident 39 days ago and Angulo suffered head and lung injuries in the crash and underwent multiple surgeries after the crash in Ecuador which also killed two others in October.

The car crash had occurred on the Rumiñahui highway in the southeast of Quito at 4.30am and while in hospital he underwent a decompressive craniectomy”operation that extracted 300 cubic centimetres of blood to release pressure inside his head caused by the trauma suffered.

Angulo had also suffered a lung contusion that required the placement of a chest tube, though no active bleeding was found but 35 days after the crash on November 11, Angulo was confirmed to have passed away from his injuries.

He was travelling in a Ford Explorer registered in his sister’s name with four other people and the car is reported to have crashed into a metal structure weighing 50 tons after failing to follow the road signs, with the impact moving the structure by 5 metres.

Marco Antonio Angulo Solórzano (8 May 2002 – 11 November 2024) was an Ecuadorian professional footballer known for his role as a defensive midfielder. His final club appearance was with L.D.U. Quito in the Ecuadorian Serie A, where he played on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, while also representing the Ecuador national team.

Notably, the tragic crash claimed the lives of both the driver and Cabezas, a player for Independiente Juniors. Angulo, who sustained severe head injuries and a lung contusion, was placed in an induced coma but sadly passed away on Monday night, as reported by El Universo. In a heartfelt tribute on social media, LDU Quito honored Angulo, stating that he would forever remain in their hearts.

The club expressed its profound sorrow in a public statement, announcing with deep pain and sadness the passing of their player, Marco Angulo. They extended their heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, acknowledging that his loss was irreplaceable and would leave an enduring void in their hearts, wishing him peace in his rest.


The Ecuadorian FA paid tribute to Angulo’s dedication and talent, reflecting on his prideful representation of Ecuador. They remembered him as both an exceptional player and a beloved teammate, whose absence would leave a deep sadness within their ranks. Angulo, a highly regarded defensive midfielder, had represented Ecuador’s Under-17 and Under-20 teams before earning his senior team debut in a friendly match against Iraq in November 2022.

The midfielder who made professional debut in 2020, had been capped twice by the Ecuador national team and his latest appearance had come in a 2-1 win over Australia in March 2023.
