A talented midfielder, Marcelo Gallardo played for DC United in the Major League Soccer, Monaco and PSG in France, River Plate in Argentina, and Nacional in Uruguay before calling it quits.
With 102 goals in 494 games and at least one championship for each side he has played for, Gallardo had a distinguished career. Additionally, Gallardo received 44 Argentina caps while representing the Albiceleste in the World Cups of 1998 and 2002.
Gallardo started coaching after he retired in 2010, and his first coaching endeavour was a Uruguayan championship with Nacional. After spending two years sharpening his skill, Gallardo accepted the position of manager of River Plate, where he went on to achieve the most accolades in the club’s history.
In total, Gallardo won 14 championships between 2014 and 2022, including two Copa Libertadores, one of which he won by defeating Boca Juniors in the championship game.
