Who is Man Singh?
Man Singh became the second Indian to win a gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships with an amazing timing of 2:14:19. India’s delegation at the Asian Marathon Championships in 2024 consisted of Man Singh, Belliappa AB, Ashvini M. Jadhav, and Jyoti Gawate. He kept the Rs. 1,50,000 winner’s cheque on his own.
The men’s marathon winner, an Indian 34-year-old, easily defeated People’s Republic of China’s Huang Yongzheng, finishing second with a 65-second time gap. Third in 2:18:18 was Tiapkin Ilya of Kyrgyzstan.
At the Mumbai Marathon in 2023, he set a prior personal best of 2:16:58. Shivnath Singh holds the men’s national record for India, clocking a 2:12:00 in Jalandhar in 1978. Singh’s time on Sunday was less than the 2:08:10 qualifying threshold for the Olympics in Paris. At 2:16:59 at the Hangzhou Asian Games the previous year, he had placed eighth.
As a member of the Indian team in the 2023 Asian Games, he placed eighth in the marathon with a time of 2:16:59. In the men’s event in Hong Kong, Belliappa Appachangada Bo of India, who finished 12th in 2:20:52 in the Asian Games, placed sixth.
Meanwhile, 2:08:10 seconds is the qualifying mark for the men’s marathon at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. 2:26:50s is the qualifying time for the women’s division. When it came to finishing times, Ashvini Jadhav, who placed eighth in 2:56:42 seconds, and Jyoti Gawate, who placed eleventh in 3:06:20 seconds, were both Indian women competing in the Asian Marathon Championships.
With a timing of 2:15:24, Huang Yongzheng of China won the silver medal, and Tiapkin Ilya of Kyrgyzstan finished third in 2:18:18.
