22-year-old James McAtee was born on 18 October 2002 in Salford, England to John and Gill McAtee. He is 5ft 11in tall. McAtee is the younger brother of John McAtee, a striker with Bolton Wanderers who signed for the club from Luton Town.
While James was in the City academy for a decade, John started at Shrewsbury Town but was released after loans at non-league clubs such as Halesowen, Telford and Curzon Ashton and eventually made his name in the National League with Grimsby Town before signing for Luton.

James McAtee’s participated in the EFL Trophy triumphs over Scunthorpe United, when he faced his older brother John, Mansfield Town, and Tranmere Rovers during the 2020–21 season. He scored in a 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United on August 24, 2021.
Alongside Manchester City colleague Tommy Doyle, James McAtee signed a season-long loan to Championship club Sheffield United on July 4, 2022. McAtee rejoined City during preseason and was a member of the first team’s group that went to Asia.
He replaced Kyle Walker in the 89th minute of City’s Premier League opening-day triumph over Burnley on August 11, 2023. He was not used as a substitute in the away victory over Sheffield United on August 27. He returned to Sheffield United on a season-long loan five days later on September 1.
