Major Radhika Sen led peacekeeping operations in the area with an emphasis on gender equality while serving with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
One of the distinguished recipients of the renowned “2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award” is Major Radhika Sen. On May 30, International Day of UN Peacekeepers, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present the Award.

The Award, which was established in 2016 by the Department for Peace Operations’ (DPO) Office of Military Affairs, honours the commitment and work of a single military peacekeeper in advancing the goals of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.

Her efforts in accordance with the 2000 Security Council resolution to shield women and girls from sexual assault associated to conflicts are also acknowledged by this award.
Radhika Sen career and education
Age 31 Radhika Sen was born in 1993 in Himachal Pradesh. She was enlisted in the Indian Army eight years ago. She chose to enlist in the military while still a biotech engineer with a Master’s degree pending from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT).
According to the UN, during her peacekeeping mission in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Major Sen organised English classes for children and health and skill-based training for adults.
According to a UN press release, Major Radhika Sen was the Commander of MONUSCO’s Engagement Platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion (INDRDB) in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from March 2023 to April 2024. According to the UN, Major Sen oversaw peacekeeping operations in the area with an emphasis on gender equality.
She organised health and career education programmes for adults in addition to English sessions for youngsters.
Sen worked alongside 1,954 MONUSCO personnel, 32 of them were women among the 6,063 Indians serving to UN peacekeeping assignments. Major Sen is a “true leader and role model,” Guterres remarked by praising her for her work. Her work served as a genuine asset to the UN organisation.
With 124 women military peacekeepers currently serving, India is notably the 11th greatest supplier of female peacekeepers to the UN. India has long been one of the nations that contributes the most police and troops to UN peacekeeping operations.
