Since January 2, 2019, Janet Trafton Mills has been Maine’s 75th governor. As the first female governor of Maine, she became the first governor since 1970 to receive a majority vote in both terms and was re-elected with the most votes in the state’s history. She has prioritized social justice, education, healthcare expansion, and economic progress during her time there.
Governor Mills still happily resides in Farmington, Maine, where she was born on December 30, 1947. She learned the value of hard work early on, going out early to deliver newspapers and serving meals at the local diner in the evening.

She is the granddaughter of potato farmers in Aroostook County and the daughter of a longtime high school English teacher and U.S. Attorney for Maine. She received her degrees from the University of Maine School of Law, the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and Mt. Blue High School in Farmington.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maine School of Law and served as an assistant attorney from 1976-1980, and then as a district attorney from 1980-1995. She served in Maine’s House of Representatives from 2002-2009 and served as Maine’s attorney general from 2009-2011 and from 2013-2019, the first woman to serve as the state’s attorney general.
She married Stan Kuklinski, a widower with five young kids ranging in age from four to sixteen, in 1985 after meeting and marrying the love of her life. She became a full-time parent and assisted in raising their daughters while working full-time once they returned to Farmington.
Now, she is the proud grandmother of two granddaughters and three grandchildren. In 2014, Stan died after a catastrophic stroke.

Maine’s first female governor is Janet Trafton Mills. She is the first governor since 1970 to be elected with a majority of the vote for both terms in office, and she received more votes than any other governor in Maine’s history.
