Mahsa Amini A Shy And Reserved Girl

Mahsa Amini, the young Iranian woman whose death under police custody triggered worldwide protests, was a shy and reserved girl. She was a resident of a small town called Saqez, a Kurdish city in the northwestern part of the country.

According to sources close to the family, Amini was someone who never even went against the country’s clerical rulers or its Islamic dress code. The sources further explained how Amini kept to herself and steered away from the drama of politics. In fact, she followed the ideal traits that most Iranians followed in the hopes of avoiding trouble in Iran.

What Exactly Happened

Mahsa Amini and her family were visiting their relatives in Tehran when Iran’s infamous morality police arrested her as soon as she stepped out of a train station. The morality police are a task force who has the power to detain people that violate Iran’s conservative dress code. The main aim of their actions is to “promote virtue and prevent vice.”

A typical unit of the military police consists of a van with a mixed male and female crew. Different units patrol or wait around at busy public spaces to police non-proper behavior and outfits.  The morality police arrested Amini on the grounds that she was not wearing her Hijab “properly”.

According to reports, Amini and her brother begged the police for mercy, clarifying that they were not familiar with the rules in Tehran. Amini kept begging her brother not to let the police take her away.

Following her arrest, her brother kept waiting for Amini in front of the ‘Vozara morality police detention centre’. However, after about two hours, an ambulance arrived at the centre in order to transfer Amini to a hospital. Amini’s family who were alarmed by the sight of the ambulance eventually found Amini at the Kasra hospital.

At the hospital, doctors did not reveal details to the family and they had no access to her CT scan. In fact, Amini’s father only caught a glimpse a small part of Amini’s leg even in the coroner’s office, as officials body covered up her entire body.

Cause Of Death

Amini’s cause of death remains a controversy as the hospital and officials claim that she was brain dead and died of a heart failure, while there are strong claims that the morality police beat her to death.

The hospital in which Amini died released an official statement on Instagram which they later took down. The statement read that Amini was already brain dead when she arrived there.

The hospital authorities gave the following statements:

Resuscitation was performed on the patient and her heartbeat returned and the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit. But unfortunately, after 48 hours on Friday, she had a cardiac arrest again, due to brain death. In spite of the medical team’s efforts, the medical team could not revive her and she died.

Meanwhile, the authorities have strongly denied all claims of beating Amini. They issued a statement insisting Amini’s cause of death was sudden heart failure, possibly stemming from  preexisting conditions. However, Amini’s family denied the claims that she had any previous health issues, and have claimed that Amini died due to  blow on the head.

Other women whom the Morality police arrested alongside Mahsa informed her father that she was beaten inside a van while being transported. However, this claim could not be verified since the cameras in the van did not function according to the police.

To further add to the wounds, the authorities released a video, which shows Amini suddenly falling at the police station, stating that they had nothing to do with Amini’s death. However, her family strongly believes that the authorities fabricated the video and edited it.

Iranian President Blames “Foreign Enemies”

Following the tense situation, the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has reportedly ordered an investigation into Amini’s case.

According to officials, at least 41 people, including police officers and a pro-government militia, have died during the protests. However, Iranian human rights groups claim that the number is much higher that reported.

Amini’s death has brought in international condemnation while Iran continues to blame ‘thugs’ linked to ‘foreign enemies’ for the unrest. Tehran has even gone on to accuse the United States and some other European countries of trying to destabilize the Islamic Republic using the tense situation.
