The Denver Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating the shooter in connection with a gunshot that occurred early on Saturday morning in Denver’s Five Points neighbourhood close to the intersection of 28th Street and Welton.

The 23-year-old MMA fighter Lumumba Sayers Jr. has been identified as one of those killed in the tragic shooting that occurred in Denver on Saturday morning.
The incident took place early on Saturday morning in Denver’s Five Points community, not far from 28th Street and Welton. He was a local, and he and his father put a lot of effort towards ending youth violence.
Who was Lumumba Sayers Jr?
23 years old was Lumumba Sayers Jr. was an MMA competitor. Lumumba Sayers Sr. said in a statement, while talking about his son:
He’s the founder of the Gloves Up Guns Down: Get Your Heads Up in the Hood movement. He was stopping a lot of the violence here in the community. Putting on boxing matches and stuff and showing these kids that there’s a different way. He ran my moving company for me, that was my best friend.”
Lumumba Sayers Jr. has performed community work and excelled in mixed martial arts. Lumumba Sayers Sr. was proud of his son’s MMA career even though Lumumba Sayers Jr. was even more talented than he was.
Sayers Sr. in a statement said:
This coward shot my son, he shot my son, man. The community that we protect, you know, we try to provide for, the community that he tried to help guide in a different direction that he grew up in, they killed my son. My son wasn’t no gang banger. He wasn’t no drug dealer. He wasn’t no troublemaker. My son was following after my footsteps.”
Sayers Sr. also said that his son’s death is a slap in the face after everything he had done to try and lessen gun violence in the Denver metro area.
