Luke Fleurs, a South African footballer and Olympian, was slain in a hijacking in Johannesburg, his Kaizer Chiefs club confirmed on Thursday.
According to authorities, the 24-year-old defender was shot while waiting for service at a fuel station in Johannesburg’s Honeydew area. Kaizer Chiefs wrote in a statement:
Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
According to police spokesman Mavela Masondo, the perpetrators left with Fleur’s vehicle, and police are investigating a murder and car hijacking.

The South African Premier Division stated a moment of silence will be observed at all first- and second-tier games on April 6 and 7, to give tribute to the player.
Who was Luke Fleurs?
Luke Donn Fleurs was a South African professional soccer player who played centre back for Kaizer Chiefs in the South African Premier Division. The 6 ft 0 in tall centre back was born on March 3, 2000 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He was paid 50,000 rand during his time at Supersport United per month.
A look at Luke Fleurs’ career
Luke Fleurs was born in Mitchells Plain but moved to Fish Hoek after enrolling for Ubuntu Cape Town’s academy in 2013, at the age of 13. He made his National First Division debut at the age of 17 and appeared in 18 league games in his first season of professional football.
Fleurs signed a long-term contract with South African Premier Division team SuperSport United in summer 2018. Fleurs joined fellow Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs on October 26, 2023, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year.
Talking about his international career, Fleurs competed for South Africa at the under-20 level. He was called up for the Bafana Bafana in 2021 and 2022, but did not receive a cap.
