Atiq Ahmed, a notorious gangster turned politician who had been charged in more than 100 criminal cases throughout the course of his lengthy political career, and his brother Ashraf were shot and killed on Saturday.
Despite receiving a life sentence for his role in the assassination of Umesh Pal, the Yogi Adityanath-led administration cited his conviction as indicative of their tough stance against the mafia and other “antisocial” groups.
Atiq had only just lost his third son, Asad Ahmed, in a recent police encounter, and was unable to attend the funeral due to his impending court hearing. No one from Asad’s immediate family was there, so his maternal grandfather and his aunt’s husband administered his last rites.

Who is Lovekesh Tiwari?
Lovekesh Tiwari is an Indian criminal from Uttar Pradesh who recently made news for publicly assassinating Atiq Ahmed while he was speaking on live TV.
He is a resident of Banda, Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name is Yagya Tiwari, while his mother’s name is Asha. He also has a younger brother named Vineet Tiwari.
After completing his schooling, he was admitted to Jai Narain PG College, Lucknow. However, he failed to complete his studies because he had no interest in getting an education.
Lovelesh Tiwari, according to his brother, had served a sentence of around one and a half years in prison for allegedly slapping a girl in Banda some three years earlier. After being freed, he started living carelessly, going missing for weeks at a time, and drinking excessively. He was also a drug addict. He had been missing for the past week.
Recently, it was discovered that he had links to the Bajrang Dal and had previously participated in local leadership initiatives. His family members have disassociated themselves from his actions and insisted that they are not connected to him.
