The NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs have signed former Welsh rugby union great Louis Rees-Zammit, who is scheduled to officially announce his signing on Friday.
Rugby fans were shocked to learn that the Welsh star has left the Welsh national team in order to follow his goal of playing in the NFL. Now, he’s fighting for a spot on a team’s summer training squad in order to play in the upcoming September season.

Who is Louis Rees-Zammit?
Louis Rees-Zammit is a Welsh former rugby union wing who was born on February 2, 2001 in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. The 23-year-old stands 1.91 m (6 ft 3 in) tall and weighs 88kg.
A look at Louis Rees-Zammit’s career
Louis Rees-Zammit played rugby for The Cathedral School in Llandaff while he was a student there. He began his junior career with the Cardiff Blues, then transferred to Hartpury College and the Gloucester Rugby Academy.
In the 2019โ20 season, at the age of 18 years and 70 days, he made his debut for the Gloucester senior team, making history as the club’s youngest Premiership player ever.
Rees-Zammit committed himself to Gloucester on a long-term basis when he signed his first professional contract on January 13, 2020. In the Round 4 victory over Sale, he made his Premiership debut in 2021โ22, scoring two tries.
He was a national team player for Wales and played in the English Premiership for Gloucester. Rees-Zammit was chosen to go on tour with the British and Irish Lions in the year 2021. He joined the NFL International Player Pathway on January 16, 2024, after leaving the rugby union.
Rees-Zammit had recorded a time of 4.43sec for the 40-yard dash, marking him out as fast enough to play in the NFL and scouts from 31 teams were there to watch him demonstrate his athleticism, with his footwork and agility catching the eye.
He will be playing in a hybrid running back-wide receiver role in the NFL.
