Premier League side Liverpool have reportedly agreed to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili on a deal worth £25m alongside £4m in add-ons. Despite becoming a Liverpool player, he will spend the rest of this season with Valencia on loan.

Giorgi Mamardashvili bio

Giorgi Mamardashvili who is a Christian by religion is a Georgian professional footballer who was born on September 29, 2000, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He currently plays as a goalkeeper for Valencia in the La Liga, on loan from Liverpool, after just recently singing for the Premier League club. Over the years, Mamardashvili has quickly established himself as a talented shot-stopper, and is the first ever Georgian goalkeeper to play in the Spanish top tier.

Notably, Mamardashvili is the son of Davit Mamardashvili, who was a former goalkeeper for WIT Georgia and Torpedo Kutaisi. Davit became a goalkeeping coach at Merani Martvili and later at Torpedo Kutaisi after his retirement and is now a pastor.

Career

Giorgi Mamardashvili started out his footballing journey with the Dinamo Tbilisi youth academy in 2012.  He eventually signed a professional contract with the club, but featured as an unused substitute throughout most of the 2018 season. As a result, he got loaned out to Rustavi for the 2019 campaign and made his senior debut on March 2, 2019. He made 28 appearances throughout the season.

After helping his new side avoid relegation, he went out on another loan move to Locomotive Tbilisi the following season. Mamardashvili played a major role for the club during their 2020 UEFA Europa League campaign. Later that year in December, the Georgian Football Federation awarded Mamardashvili with the Goalkeeper of the Year award.

That same year, on June 7, 2021, Mamardashvili joined La Liga side Valencia on a one-year loan deal, including a buyout clause. After starting out with the reserves in the Tercera División RFEF, he eventually moved up the ropes and earned a spot in the starting lineup for the league opener against Getafe.

Valencia eventually signed Mamardashvili on a permanent deal on December 31, 2021, with a contract running till 2024. The deal also included an option for a one-year extension. Mamardashvili made 18 league appearances and eight clean sheets that season, including 560 minutes without conceding a single goal. In the next 2022/23 season, Mamardashvili played all 38 league games without a single substitution.

In the next season, Mamardashvili broke the team record with 60 consecutive appearances in La Liga. He eventually played consecutive 69 league matches and set a clean sheet record of 13. Following his impressive performances, Liverpool confirmed a deal with Mamardashvili on August 27, 2024. He will spend this season at Valencia on loan before joining the Premier League club by the 2025/26 season.
