On Thursday, the United Kingdom appointed Lindy Cameron as the inaugural female High Commissioner to India, have a look at her biography

A statement released by the British government reads that, “Lindy Cameron CB OBE has been designated as the British High Commissioner to the Republic of India, succeeding Alex Ellis CMG, who will assume another diplomatic service role.”

Following the British government releasing their statement, the incoming envoy expressed her excitement and happiness for her new role as she said “Immensely proud to be appointed the next British High Commissioner to India.

“Huge thanks to Alex Ellis for leaving such a great legacy. So looking forward to working with the amazing @UKInIndia team. I can’t wait to get started!”

For the unfamiliar, as per media reports, although Lindy Cameron is the first woman representative to India, however there were three women who have represented Delhi in London since the 1950s.

Lindy Cameron will succeed Alex Ellis, who has just completed his three-year tenure in New Delhi office. Conversing about the new development to the media, Alex stated “A great appointment to a lovely job with an excellent UK in India team in a fascinating, vast and diverse country. Enjoy it!”

About Lindy Cameron

Lindy Cameron hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland. She has been a stalwart in the British government since 1998, amassing extensive expertise across conflict areas, security domains, and cyber security.

Speaking about her academic pursuit, Cameron has pursues a degree in BA in modern history from Oxford University. Subsequently after her degree, she embarked on consulting career as she joined McKinsey.

Later she enrolled in Masters in Law and Diplomacy from the prestigious Fletcher School at Tufts University in the United States. Apart from it, the incoming envoy has also worked for British aid organization DFID aka Department for International Development at the director-level-position.

The last time Cameron toured India was in February 2023. At the time her visit was planned to discuss advances in cyber security and defence against possible attacks. Now, her portfolio would also include the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UK.
