The Georgia sorority girl whose mugshot went viral Wednesday said that she was arrested because she “accidentally” started speeding immediately after getting ticketed for speeding.

Lily Stewart, 20 whose arrest photo went viral said she was cuffed for the double oopsie while driving to a birthday bash on a rural road March 8.

“It was the second time speeding that got me arrested,” she told The Post. “[The cop] placed me in handcuffs and put me in the back of his car.”

Stewart, who is a member of the Alpha Chi sorority, said a Georgia State Patrol officer first pulled her over for driving roughly 75 mph in a 55 mph zone not far from Athens and she revealed, “I was going to a friend’s birthday in Milledgeville, [Ga.] — and I had just gotten ready not long before, so that’s maybe why my makeup and hair still looked good.”

Twenty-year-old Lily Stewart attends the University of Georgia in Athens. She has been a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority since 2023, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“The officer saw me while he was driving the opposite direction. He was like, ‘You’re speeding’ and he was super friendly, and I was super friendly, and he wrote me a ticket,” the University of Georgia student said.

Reactions to Lily Stewart’s viral mugshot

The mugshot and information about the arrest of Lily Stewart for speeding, a violation that carries a hefty fine of up to $1,000 in Georgia were posted on the Morgan County Crime page. Social media users praised Stewart’s appearance profusely.

She was hailed “Miss America” by some, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp was urged to pardon Stewart by others. “Is her phone number in the report? A person commented, “I’m requesting a friend.”

‘They done locked up miss America,’ one comment read.

Another user quipped, “Guilty of stealing my heart, your honour,’ another said.”

“I guess being pretty is a crime now,” a user joked. “I’d pardon her and give her a job in my office if I was Governor of Georgia,” a user said.

Stephen Morris, Lily Stewart’s attorney, told media that he was successful in having the speeding case against her dropped when her photos went viral. Morris told the prosecutor that Stewart was subjected to online harassment by trolls who posted upsetting remarks after her mugshot went viral. Fearing for Stewart’s safety, the prosecution chose to drop the case.

Since the lawsuit is no longer pending, Morris is now contacting media organizations to ask them to take down Lily’s booking photo. Stewart will still be held accountable for her 84 mph speeding in a 55 mph zone, though, even after being fired. She has been mandated to take a defensive driving course and perform community service.
