After a brief illness, Everton paid tribute to Lily Barnes, the team’s longtime stadium tour guide. The Everton family was shocked to learn of Lily Barnes’ untimely death who passed away after suffering a short illness. She was a gifted woman who had spent decades providing both young and old with amazing experiences at Goodison Park.

The club in a statement stated that she was loved by everyone she filled her position with pride, zeal, love and a vast amount of knowledge. The club wrote:

The face of Goodison Park for decades, Lily was a much-loved stadium tour guide who filled her role with pride, enthusiasm, passion and an encyclopaedic knowledge.”

Speaking to the ECHO in September 2022, Mrs Barnes described her love of narrating tales from Everton’s distinguished past, adding:

“I couldn’t think of anything better. People say ‘Don’t you get fed up?’ I say: ‘No. Never. I could go on and on and on.”

Who was Lily Barnes?

79 year old Lily Barnes was a long service tour guide at Everton. When she first began working with the Blues in 1979, it was in the stadium’s hospitality area. Later, she began taking on more responsibilities. Everybody knew her name when Goodison Park was brought up.

She had collaborated with the legendary Dixie Dean, another member of Everton royalty, ten years prior at a Littlewoods location in Birkenhead.

Since taking on the position, Lily has had a profound impact on millions of people’s lives by making the Blues Stadium Tour one of the most likeable in the Premier League.

Goodison Park is a football stadium located two miles (3 km) north of the city centre in the Walton neighbourhood of Liverpool, England. With a seating capacity of 39,414 people, it has served as the home of Premier League team Everton since 1892.
