Leo Varadkar attended Trinity College Dublin (TCD), where he completed his studies in law before further going to School of Medicine. He was also a member of TCD’s Young Fine Gael branch and the Vice-President of the Youth of the European People’s Party. He was born to Ashok and Miriam.
Varadkar was born in Dublin to an Irish mother who worked as a nurse and an Indian father, who was a qualified doctor. While he is unmarried, he is dating boyfriend Matthew Barrett.
Leo Varadkar Professional Career
Varadkar was selected for the Washington Ireland Program for the Service and Leadership (WIP), after a half-year personal and professional development program for Irish students held in Washington, D.C. After finishing his internship at the KEM Hospital based in Mumbai, he got a graduation degree in 2003. Then he served as a non-consultant hospital doctor at St. James’s Hospital and later in Connolly Hospital for numerous years before becoming a general practitioner in 2010.
Leo Varadkar was just 20 years old and a second-year medical student when he ran unsuccessfully in Mulhuddart local electoral area in early 1999. Varadkar was further co-opted to Fingal County Council in 2003 as a replacement for Sheila Terry in Castleknock local electoral region. He garnered 4,894 votes and was elected on the 1st count.
Varadkar got elected to Dail Eireann as a Fine Gael TD for the Dublin West constituency which was held in the 2007 general election. Enda Kenny, Leader of Opposition party appointed him to the Front Bench by making him the Spokesperson for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment. In a reshuffle in 2010 was promoted to post of Spokesperson for Communications, Energy, and also for Natural Resources. Varadkar was re-elected to Dail Eireann in 2011 with a total number of 8,359 first-preference votes
He was earlier serving as Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s Minister for Social Protection for the years 2016 to 2017, Minister for Health from 2014 to 2016, and Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Sport from 2011 to 2014.
On 26th of June in 2020, it was declared that Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, and Green Party had agreed to form a coalition government including a rotation agreement in the offices of Taoiseach and Tanaiste.
