Indian lawn bowler Pinki Singh is presently competing for India at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. In the semi-finals of the Women’s Lawn Ball competition at CWG 2022, Singh (second), Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip), Nayanmoni Saikia (third), and Lovely Choubey (lead) managed to defeat New Zealand, guaranteeing India for the first time in Commonwealth history at least the silver medal in the sport. Notably, Tirkey and Singh also competed for India in the women’s lawn bowling competition at the 2010 CWG.
Education and background
Singh, a 41-year-old native of Delhi who teaches physical education in a Delhi school, saw her first taste of international glory in 2009 when she took home the bronze medal in the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships. Singh is competing in the ’22 CWG for the fourth time; in the ’10 CWG, she took part in the triples event and finished in fourth place. Singh later competed for India in the pairs and fours categories at the 2014 CWG and the singles and triples categories at the 2018 CWG.
Singh heroics helped India defeat New Zealand
In the semifinal match against New Zealand, Singh and her team were behind 1-6 but quickly came back to win 7-6. The two sides continued to trade leads, with India gaining a 10-7 advantage until the Kiwis once more overcame a deficit to win the game 13-12. The Indian women, on the other hand, maintained their composure in the crucial juncture and triumphed brilliantly 16-13. Singh took charge of the situation and provided her team with two outstanding throws. India will now compete against South Africa on August 2 in an effort to win gold.
In the CWG 2022, Indian athletes have so far won nine medals so far in various categories, demonstrating their strong performance and by winning gold, silver, and bronze in equal numbers.
