A 28-year-old woman from the Netherlands, who chronicled her struggle with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome), passed away on January 27, 2024, after opting for euthanasia.

Prior to her decision, she expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her during her illness and specifically acknowledged those who stood by her before she disclosed her wish for euthanasia.

Lauren’s Last Message

In a poignant departure message, Lauren mentioned the public disclosure of the date and time, stating, “I chose to make the date and time public because you have all been so excited for this moment with me.

“I know from experience how supportive it can be to know when it is happening so that you can reflect on it for a moment or light a candle if you wish.”

She humorously shared a meme on her X account before undergoing the euthanasia process. Lauren’s euthanasia application faced challenges, despite its legality in the Netherlands since 2002, as per reports.

Lauren’s Family Confirmed Passing

Her loved ones later provided an update, confirming that Lauren peacefully passed away at 1:55 pm in the presence of her parents, Leonie and Peter, and her best friend Lau.

The mother of Lauren, 28, who died by assisted suicide also lost her son to bone cancer.

The message expressed gratitude for the compassion and support received from well-wishers. In a heartfelt tribute, Mary Vinther, a friend of Lauren, described her as “daring, kind, and — even on her last days — so effortlessly funny.”

Lauren had been open about her journey, sharing updates on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where she received encouragement and support from her followers.

Diagnosed with ME in 2019, Lauren also coped with autism, anxiety, and ADHD. Despite facing complexities in her case, including psychological conditions, Lauren’s decision to pursue voluntary euthanasia was documented on her blog starting in 2022.

Her wait for the procedure was extended due to the pandemic, and she continued to update her followers on her health and experiences. On X, she humorously described herself as a “stay-at-home cat parent.”
