The tragic death comes just 48 hours after Rodney lost his 18-year-old son, Ryan, during a police shootout.
Deputy Larry Henderson who was run over by Rodney served for 33 years with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, beginning in 1991 and his roles with the sheriff’s office included time spent as an academy instructor, dive team member, SWAT team member, FBI task force member and bomb unit member.

Cincinnati police deputy Larry Henderson killed
A long-serving sheriff’s deputy named Larry Henderson was recently killed after being struck by a vehicle. The incident took place on Friday, while Larry was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during a commencement event. Authorities have since identified the driver as 38-year-old Rodney Hinton Jr., who is the father of police shootout victim Ryan Hinton.
According to prosecutors, Hinton Jr. allegedly lined up his car and accelerated toward Henderson intentionally before fatally hitting him. Prosecutors described the incident as a calculated act as law enforcement officers packed the courtroom Saturday during Hinton Jr.’s arraignment for aggravated murder. Hinton currently remains in custody without bond and is pending a hearing.

Larry Henderson bio and age
Larry Henderson was a veteran law enforcement officer who was recently rammed to death by a vehicle. He was serving with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for 33 years and had just recently retired. Despite his retirement, he continued to work part-time as a special deputy. According to his colleagues, he was a compassionate, dedicated, and highly respected man within the department and among the public.
“He was a Marine, and he was a law enforcement officer, so he had the hard side and he got the job done especially being a member of the SWAT team, but yet he could take that hat off very easily and turn around and be a sympathetic and humane person who just loved his community,” said Scott Snow, chief ranger of Great Parks Hamilton County.
Even after he retired last December, he continued to work special details and that’s what he was doing Friday when he was killed while directing traffic for the University of Cincinnati’s graduation.
In addition to working for the sheriff’s office, Henderson spent the last 20 years working part time security at Anderson Hospital’s emergency department and was a 1985 graduate of Mariemont High School. After serving in the Marines, he returned home to serve his community as a sheriff’s deputy and was a member of several specialized units, including the Dive Team, SWAT, FBI Task Force Officer and the HCSO Bomb Unit.
Henderson was a husband, father of five, grandfather and a foster parent and he his wife were fostering two young children whom they hoped to adopt.
Career
Larry Henderson started out his career as a police trainer within the Sheriff’s Office, where he earned a reputation for excellence. Over the years at the academy, he mentored and trained hundreds of deputies across various divisions. Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey even praised Larry for his extraordinary ability to connect with officers and guide them throughout their careers.
Tributes
Following his death, tributes have since poured in from across the city and state. On Friday night, several law enforcement officials held a solemn procession in his honor. Meanwhile, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called the incident an “intentional act of violence” while offering condolences to Henderson’s family and colleagues. Sheriff McGuffey also shared a tribute stating:
He was so well-liked and so well-known, we could fill this building with the law enforcement agencies that respect him, love him, his friends, his family. What a tremendous loss we have all suffered.”
With investigations for both deaths underway, city leaders and law enforcement have urged the public to remain patient and calm. Police Chief Teresa Theetge promised absolute transparency and accountability throughout the whole course of the investigation into both tragedies.
