National Guard members did not seem to take part in the arrests made by Los Angeles police, but they did stand guard behind plastic shields. Many of the demonstrators had left hours later, while there were still occasional altercations that were far less frequent than on earlier evenings. The curfew, according to officials, was required to prevent theft and vandalism by troublemakers.

Earlier, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom charged that Trump’s increasing use of the National Guard was creating a “military dragnet” throughout the country’s second-largest metropolis. Although none were spotted on the streets Tuesday, he also sent Marines.

“That’s when the downward spiral began. He doubled down on his dangerous National Guard deployment by fanning the flames even harder, and the president, he did it on purpose,” Newsom said.

Newsom requested that the military’s assistance to federal immigration authorities be immediately halted by a court, with some guardsmen now providing protection around agents while they made arrests. It would simply increase tensions and encourage civil disturbance, he claimed. The administration has a few days to carry out those actions as the judge scheduled a hearing for Thursday.

The modification brings troops one step closer to carrying out the deportations and other law enforcement measures that Trump has pledged as part of his administration’s immigration crackdown. Those who fight officers may be temporarily detained by the Guard, but law enforcement will ultimately make any arrests.

Despite state and local leaders’ protests, Trump has activated 700 Marines and more than 4,000 members of the National Guard. Initially, they were used to guard federal structures.
