Who is Lakhbir Singh Landa?

Age 34 Landa, born in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district in 1989, has more than 30 cases registered against him in various districts of the state. He fled to Canada years ago and currently resides in Edmonton, Alberta. In the past, Landa’s aged parents mentioned his involvement in heroin smuggling at the age of 16, which prompted his subsequent escape to Canada in 2016, after which he lost contact with them.

Landa’s presence still evokes fear in his hometown of Harike, located in the border district of Tarn Taran city. Till now, residents continue to receive extortion calls in Landa’s name. Landa’s gang allegedly remains active in Harike, with him overseeing operations remotely from Canada. Reports indicate Landa’s close association with Harwinder Singh Sandhu, also known as Rinda, a gangster based in Pakistan.

Why Landa is considered an individual terrorist?

In July 2011, authorities filed the first case against Landa under the Arms Act at Harike Pattan, alleging attempted murder. Subsequently, in May 2016, Punjab Police booked him for kidnapping in Moga before he fled to Canada. Between 2016 and 2020, Landa remained inactive while attempting to establish a legal business in Canada. However, he resurfaced in connection with the 2021 Patti double murder case in Punjab.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) designated Lakhbir Singh Landa as an individual terrorist. Following this, he became the 55th individual to feature in the list of terrorists under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). In their report, the MHA accused Landa of planning the rocket attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali in 2022.
