A high school lacrosse player, Sadie Mauro has been identified as the 17-year-old who died after being flung into the water after a boat off Cape Cod collided with a jetty. The boat carrying six people smashed into a jetty at Sesuit Harbour in Dennis at 9 p.m. on Friday, according to Massachusetts State Police.
According to the police, the teen’s body was discovered off Cold Storage Beach at about 11:30 p.m. after a multi-agency search. With a head wound, a second male teen was hospitalized after being reported hurt.
In the meantime, it is unclear what caused the incident and whether charges will be filed.
Who Is Sadie Mauro?
The principal of Mauro’s high school, Dover Sherborn, called the teen “genuine and effortlessly kind.” Last month, Mauro participated in the lacrosse state championship and excelled as a midfielder.
In reference to her plans to play lacrosse in college, the high school student stated on her recruitment page, “I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately.”
Middle and high school students are invited to a gathering on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the school library, according to Principal John Smith’s letter to parents.
The Joint Search Operation Of Sadie Mauro
Following the incident on Friday night, the Coast Guard, the state Environmental Police, the Barnstable County Dive Team, and the Sandwich Fire Marine conducted a joint search after receiving reports of a missing person.
In an effort to gather boat debris, State Police marine personnel, Massachusetts Environmental Police marine resources, and an underwater recovery squad conducted dive operations at the collision scene on Saturday.
The boat was equipped with two outboard 250-horsepower motors and had an Alabama registration, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.
