Tension escalated in the 39th minute when Bellingham was shown a straight red card for dissent. The English midfielder, frustrated by the referee’s decisions, voiced his displeasure while Madrid were preparing to take a goal kick and Munuera Montero wasted no time in brandishing the red card, leaving Madrid a man down for the remainder of the game. This controversial dismissal angered Ancelotti, who believed Bellingham’s sending-off was harsh and only added to what he saw as one-sided officiating as the match ended 1-1.

Munuera Montero was chosen on April 21, 2021, to serve as a video assistant referee during the 2021 Copa America in Argentina and Colombia as part of a referee exchange scheme between UEFA and CONMEBOL. This is the first time a team of European referees has been chosen to officiate at the Copa América, and he will be joined by four of his countrymen at the competition.
This Saturday, Real Madrid’s insane institutional campaign against the referees was carried out on the field once more. At El Sadar, Munuera Montero infuriated the Merengue players. Throughout the game, most of them complained a lot, especially Vinicius and Modric, about three penalties that were not awarded and another that allowed Ante Budimir to score the game-winning equalizer after Camavinga stomped the Croatian striker.
