The Los Angeles Clippers have reported that Jerry “Mr. Clutch” West, 86, passed away quietly at home by the side of his wife Karen Bua on Monday after an amazing six-decade career in basketball.

Jerry West was the second youngest of six children and the son of a housewife and coal miner. He was raised in Chelyan, West Virginia. His basketball career started at East Bank High School.

Since his debut season in 1960 as a member of the Los Angeles Laker and the United States Olympic squad, he has been at the forefront of the league. He shared the ring with the Lakers in 1972. He was a professional player until 1974, when he joined the same squad as a coach. He is survived by his wife Karen Bua.

Jerry West and Karen Bua got married on May 31, 1978. It was Jerry’s second and Karen’s first wedding. Jerry was initially married to Martha Kane, with whom he shared 16 years of marriage.

Despite their eventual divorce in 1976, the couple had three kids together: Michael, David, and Mark. David, West’s eldest kid, was named for his brother, a Korean War battle dead whom West referred to as his “hero.” Since his three boys from his first marriage prefer to live private lives, not much is known about them.

Karen is younger by fifteen years. Karen worked as an assistant teacher at one of the district’s campuses for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She worked as the State Controller’s representative in California in addition and the two met when she was a cheerleader.

Jerry’s sons Jonnie and Ryan are participating in sports. Jonnie played basketball for four years while majoring in sports management at West Virginia University. He spent four years as a collegiate basketball player at West Virginia University. He participated in four NCAA Tournaments, going all the way to the Final Four in 2010.

After earning an MBA in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in 2012, he started working at Wasserman Media Group for former sports agent Arn Tellem. In the same year, Jonnie was hired by the Golden State Warriors’ G-League team in Santa Cruz as director of basketball operations and advance scout.

Jerry West’s death

The NBA declared that Jerry West, 86, had passed away on June 12, 2024, saying, “Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years.”
In addition to being an NBA champion and an All-Star for each of his 14 seasons as a player, he also stood out for being a flawless competitor who relished the big occasions.
