Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley is reportedly facing growing criticism amid the ongoing wildfire crisis in California, which has prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents. The fires have already devastated over 4,000 acres, with no containment in sight. In addition to widespread destruction, it has been claimed that some firefighters have encountered dry hydrants, making it difficult to combat the flames effectively. These difficulties have fueled mounting doubts about Crowley’s leadership.
The fires, including the Eaton Fire in Altadena (1,000 acres), the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades (2,900 acres), and the Hurst Fire north of San Fernando (500 acres), are said to be raging out of control. A fourth fire, the Tyler Fire in Riverside County, has also been reported to have ignited, burning approximately 15 acres. Kristin Crowley whose DOB isn’t known but she is believed to be aged between 50-60 years is known for having made history as the first woman and first openly LGBTQ+ individual to assume the role of Los Angeles Fire Chief. She stepped into the position in 2022 after the resignation of former Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas, whose tenure had been marred by criticism over his handling of s*xism and racism within the department.
At the time of Crowley’s appointment, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti emphasized that her selection was based on her demonstrated leadership abilities rather than her gender or s*xuality. Crowley brought with her 22 years of experience across various roles in the LAFD, including firefighter, paramedic, engineer, fire inspector, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief, fire marshal, and deputy chief. Notably, she made history in 2016 as the first female fire marshal in Los Angeles.

When Crowley accepted the nomination, she expressed a commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness, improving firefighter safety, and fostering an inclusive culture within the department. However, amidst the ongoing wildfire crisis, several individuals on social media have expressed concerns about Crowley’s leadership. Some have suggested that she has focused too much on LGBTQ+ initiatives at the expense of ensuring that firefighting resources.
In response to concerns about water shortages, LAFD Captain Erik Scott explained that while water pressure was indeed a challenge during the Pacific Palisades fire, LADWP had filled all available water storage tanks, including three large ones in the Palisades area. However, the high demand for water, particularly at higher elevations, hindered the refilling process, creating difficulties for firefighting teams.
Kristin has served as a Firefighter, Paramedic, Engineer, Fire Inspector, Captain I, Captain II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Deputy, and Fire Chief and has gained valuable experience in both field assignments on emergency apparatus and administrative duty in multiple areas within the Department. Before her appointment, she served as a Chief Officer for nine years as the Commander of Battalion 13 (South Los Angeles), Battalion 6 (San Pedro), the Professional Standards Division, Fire Prevention and Public Safety Bureau, Administrative Operations and has served as an executive board member for the Chief Officers’ Association and The Women in the Fire Service. Crowley also chairs the Fire Code Committee for Los Angeles and serves at the Los Angeles Fire Department Leadership Academy as a facilitator and instructor.
Her plan had never been to fight fires, but to study medicine and raised five hours away from Saint Mary’s in Green Bay, Wisconsin, she chose to attend the Saint Mary’s College in Green Bay, Wisconsin where she graduated from in 1993 with a degree in biology on a pre-med track and shortly after graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, enrolled in paramedic school, and began studying to take the MCAT before going onto attend the Harvard Business School.
