Krishna Das is a popular American vocalist who is renowned for his performances of Hindu devotional music, specifically the kirtan which involves the chanting of various names of God. Krishan was born as Jeffrey Kagel in a middle-class Jewish family on May 31, 1947, in Long Island, New York, United States. He is currently 77-years-old and over the years has played a significant role in popularizing kirtan in the West.

Career and achievements
Krishna Das has released seventeen albums over the years since 1996. Das met renowned American spiritual teacher Ram Dass back in his 20s, who then introduced him to his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Krishna then travelled to India back in 1970 to meet Neem Karoli Baba, who also went by the name Maharaj-ji. Interestingly, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have also previously attended Neem Karoli Babaโs ashram.
Krisha is popularly known as KD, and the New York Times once described him as the ‘Chant Master of American Yoga’. The American vocalist most notably performed at the 2013 Grammy Awards. There at the same awards, his album Live Ananda (2012) received a nomination for the Best New Age Album award.
Krishna Das learned and adopted the practice in North India while living near his Guru, Maharajji, in the 1970s. A devotee of the North Indian Saint, Neem Karoli Baba, Krishna Das has played an enormous role in popularizing the traditional practice of kirtan in the West.
In 1994, he established a kirtan residency in New York City, leading chanting at Jivamukti Yoga Center. He has also established the Kirtan Wallah Foundation (2014) to help spread the teachings of his guru, Maharajji, and the tradition of kirtan.
