Veteran member of the Congress, K Suresh served eight terms as an MP before the Kerala High Court ruled in 2009 that his election was illegitimate, a ruling that was later overturned by the Supreme Court.
In the 2009 election, Suresh, who was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989 from Adoor and then again from the same constituency in 1991, 1996, and 1999, was proclaimed the winner from Mavelikkara with a margin of 48,046 votes.
Following the delimitation, Adoor lost its status as a Lok Sabha seat.
Suresh had accused rival parties and some members of his own party at the time of filing the complaint, believing it to be a plot.
Suresh triumphed in the elections held in 2014, 2019 and, most recently, 2024. From October 2012 till October 2014, he was the state minister for labor.
In the past, he presided over Kerala’s Congress state unit and was a member of multiple parliamentary committees.

K Suresh controversies
K Suresh has been involved in a number of scandals in the past. Due to his caste, the Kerala High Court disqualified him in 2010.
A media report states that the High Court was considering a plea from his opponent, R. S. Anil of the CPI, who contended that Suresh was not eligible to run for the SC-reserved Mavelikkara seat because he belonged to the OBC Cheramar Christian community rather than the Scheduled Caste category of Cheramar Hindu community.
In response to Suresh’s motion, the Supreme Court reversed the decision of the High Court and declared that he was qualified to run for the Mavelikkara Lok Sabha constituency. Six criminal complaints against him have been filed, including ones including rioting, unauthorized assembly, and impeding the performance of official duties by a public officer.
