Kishori Lal Sharma set to represent Congress in Amethi constituency

Veteran Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma is all set to represent his party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. KL Sharma will submit his nominations for the role today. He will be contesting from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi constituency against the BJP’s sitting candidate, Smriti Irani. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi previously represented the seat in the Lower House of Parliament from 2004 until 2019.

Rahul Gandhi is currently seeking re-election from Kerala’s Wayanad and contesting against the BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh in Rae Bareli. Following the announcement of his candidacy, Sharma stated:

I abide by the decision of the Gandhis. No, I don’t think I am a weak candidate. I know Amethi more than Smriti Irani does.”

Kishorilal Sharma, 63 from Ludhiana, came to Amethi as part of an initiative by Rajiv Gandhi to set up a youth brigade to monitor development works in his seat. Apart from his duties in Amethi and Rae Bareli, Sharma has served as AICC secretary in-charge of Bihar.

KL Sharma is a veteran Congress leader who originally hails from Punjab. He has worked for the Congress party for over four decades. He initially arrived in Amethi in 1983 as a Congress worker before establishing close ties with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After Rajiv Gandhi’s sudden demise in 1991, Sharma continued working for the Congress cause in Amethi. Since then, he has played a key role for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh’s two key constituencies .

Sharma also played a key factor in Sonia Gandhi’s electoral victory in 1999, as well as her transition to represent Rae Bareli constituency. After Rahul Gandhi got elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi in 2004, Sharma started managing the party’s affairs in both Amethi and Rae Bareli. Besides UP’s two key constituencies, Sharma also looks after party affairs all the way in Bihar and Punjab.
