The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially appointed Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the senior men’s team. Following the appointment, Jamil becomes the first Indian to be handed the role full-time in the modern era, after years of foreign appointments. Khalid is known for his deep understanding of domestic football and tactical discipline, and he has previously coached clubs like NorthEast United FC and Aizawl FC. He famously led Aizawl FC to an I-League title as well.

Khalid Ahmed Jamil is the newly appointed Indian men’s senior football team head coach who was born on April 21, 1977, in Kuwait City, Kuwait. He is currently 48 years old as of 2025, and despite being born abroad, he has always identified as Indian and chose to represent India at the international level. Jamil is well-regarded in Indian football circles and he is known for his contribution as both a player and coach.

Born in Kuwait City on April 21, 1977 to Punjabi parents, Jamil’s early love for football was shaped by an under-14 camp before he moved back to India for whom he also played football at the international level. While his salary as the new head coach of the Indian football team isn’t known, East Bengal had struck a deal for a salary of Rs 1.25 crore back in 2017 for Khalid.
Meanwhile, the monthly salary of Igor Stimac as the Indian football team head coach was USD 24,000 (INR 19,69,000). Annually, Stimac made USD 288,000.

Khalid Jamil started out his playing career in 1997 with Mahindra United and later represented Air India and Mumbai FC. Despite having never played in his first season, he eventually made an impact with Air India, where he turned down an offer from Brunei. He eventually retired in 2009, following a career hampered by injuries.
After his retirement, Khalid took charge of Mumbai FC as manager from 2009 to 2016, and later led Aizawl FC to their historic I-League title in 2017. Over the years, he has also managed East Bengal and NorthEast United FC, becoming the first Indian head coach in the Indian Super League.
