On October 27, the former Hamas leader Khaled Mashal gave a virtual speech at a pro-Palestine protest in Malappuram, Kerala, and left everyone shocked.

Khaled Mashal, the leader of Hamas, addressed the youth wing of Jamaat-e-Islami in pro – Palestine rally in Malappuram, Kerala.

His speech was held during the demonstration, which was planned by Jamaat-e-Islami’s youth branch, the Solidarity Youth Movement, to promote harmony in support of Gaza during the continuing hostilities.
In his speech, Khaled Mashal discussed the state of affairs in Palestine and emphasized the importance of unity in the face of difficulties. He said,
Together, we will defeat Zionists and we will stand united for Gaza, which is fighting for Al Aqsa (mosque). Israel is taking revenge on our residents. Houses are being demolished. They have destroyed more than half of Gaza. They are destroying churches, temples, universities, and even UN institutions…
Nonetheless, the demonstration drew condemnation from around the nation. Notably, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Kerala, K. Surendran, voiced his disapproval of the involvement of what he called “Hamas extremists.”

Who is Khaled Mashal?
Khaled Mashal is a Palestinian politician, renowned for being a former leader of the militant group, Hamas. He has been in the news because he recently virtually addressed the pro-Gaza demonstration held in Kerala.
He was born on 28 May 1956 in Silwad, Jordanian-occupied West Bank. His father’s name is Abd al-Qadir Mashal and he was a farmer. After the Six-Day War in 1967, his family took refuge in Jordan. But a month later, he and his family relocated to Kuwait.
Khaled Mashal went to Abdullah al-Salim Secondary School in the early 1970s after graduating from high school. He thereafter enrolled in Kuwait University, from where he earned a bachelor of science in physics in 1978.
Although he is married, not much is known about his spouse. Mashal is a father of 7 children; three daughters and four sons. At the moment, he and his family reside in Qatar.
He is currently 67 years old.
His career
Khaled Mashal, in his college days, became a student leader and joined the Muslim Brotherhood. Mashal, however, went on to become a teacher and taught physics in Kuwait until 1984 after receiving his degree.
When Hamas was established in 1983, he joined the group and took on the role of project head. He became the leader of Hamas’ politburo in 1992 and one of its founding members.
After Israel killed Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and his successor, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, in the spring of 2004, he was acknowledged as the leader of Hamas. In the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary election, Hamas shocked the world by winning a majority of seats, under his leadership. His tenure ended in 2017 when Mashal resigned as the head of Hamas’ politburo.
