Willard, 49, spent the last three seasons in College Park, accumulating a 65-29 record and led the Terps to a 27-9 record and a Sweet 16 appearance this year. Maryland’s season ended Thursday, when it fell to Florida, 87-71.

Kevin Willard was previously the head coach of Iona College, where he assumed leadership following the dismissal of Jeff Ruland following a 2–28 record in 2007. Willard worked as Rick Pitino’s assistant for ten years before joining Iona.

Willard guided the Gaels to their 14th 20-win season in school history during his third season with Iona. Compared to his first two seasons in New Rochelle, it was a nine-win improvement.

The Gaels achieved the greatest turnaround in NCAA Division I during that time period in 2009–10, rising from a program that was ranked 10th to last in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) to a Top 80 RPI. Following the turnaround, Willard agreed to take the head coaching job at Big East Conference school Seton Hall University on March 28, 2010.

He guided the Pirates to the Big East title in 2016. He became the first Pirates head coach to guide the squad to four consecutive seasons with 20 wins on March 14, 2019.  With 213 victories, Willard surpassed P.J. Carlesimo for second place in school history with Seton Hall’s victory over Rutgers University on December 12, 2021.

While his salary at Villanova isn’t known, when Maryland hired Willard in March 2022, they gave him a seven-year contract worth $29.4 million and the deal included a yearly base salary of $500,000.
