I am self made. I didn’t piss away my degree. I definitely did not copy Humans of New York while I was studying abroad & I’m not going around suing people for doing the same thing that I did.

I've stayed quiet on the appropriation of my work because I think @HumansOfBombay shares important stories, even if they've monetized far past anything I'd feel comfortable doing on HONY. But you can't be suing people for what I've forgiven you for. https://t.co/0jZM05YyTt

Karishma Mehta career
Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York, Karishma Mehta set out to create a similar platform for the vibrant city she called home. Brandon Stanton recently shared on X that he forgave Karishma for copying his concept. But now Karishma herself has filed a lawsuit against a website for copying her concept. Brandon mentioned that he was disappointed. In January 2014, Humans of Bombay was born on Facebook with Karishma and her initial team approaching strangers on the streets by capturing their essence through photographs.
What started as a Facebook page soon evolved into a robust website, humansofbombay.in. The platform not only shared stories but also facilitated crowdfunding for the subjects by providing them with tangible support for their journeys. This initiative transformed taboo subjects into conversations, creating a space for people to connect and support one another.
Karishma’s subjects are everyday heroes who have faced adversity with resilience and courage. Through her lens, she has given a voice to those who have battled abusive relationships, addiction, and societal exclusion. The impact of her work extends beyond narratives as she has raised substantial funds for causes ranging from aiding acid attack victims to supporting the children of sex workers.
In 2016, Karishma took a leap of faith by compiling her posts, some of which had never been published online into a self-published book bearing the same name. The proceeds from this endeavor were directed towards sustaining the Humans of Bombay platform by further solidifying her commitment to the stories that deserved to be heard.
Humans of Bombay boasts over a million followers on Facebook and over two million on Instagram due to the resonance of the stories shared. Karishma’s ability to touch the hearts of millions is the power of authentic storytelling.
In 2022, Karishma expanded her storytelling prowess by launching an interview-based YouTube web series, “How The Hell Did I Do It?” This series features conversations with accomplished individuals from various walks of life by providing invaluable insights into their journeys and accomplishments.
