Who is Karen Vergata of Manhattan Gilgo Beach murders victim 7 alleged to have been killed by Rex Heuermann
Police investigating the infamous Gilgo Beach homicides say a 34-year-old Manhattan woman has been identified as the victim formerly known as Jane Doe No. 7 from Gilgo Beach.
Who Is Karen Vergata?
On Friday, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney confirmed the identity of the missing woman. Karen Vergata, 34, was the woman who the police had identified as “Jane Doe No. 7” and “Fire Island Jane Doe.” Vergata was a resident of West 45th Street, Manhattan, and is thought to have been employed as an escort at the time of her abduction.
She vanished on February 14, 1996, according to Tierney. Two months later, on April 20, her legs were found in a plastic bag in Davis Park on the bayside of Fire Island’s Blue Point Beach.
Karen Vergata Went Missing
In 1996, no one reported her missing. The victim was a white woman with numerous distinctive scars, including signs of surgery on her left ankle, when her remains were discovered on Fire Island, according to the Doe Network.
On April 11, 2011, her skull was found among the partially fragmented bones of Jane Doe No. 3, also known as “Peaches,” west of Tobay Beach in Nassau County.
Tierney said that in July 2011, DNA analysis connected Vergata’s two sets of remains. In October 2022, genetic genealogy and a related buccal swab allowed for a definitive identification. Vergata’s close relatives were informed of her passing, but Tierney asked that the three-decade-old murder investigation be kept “confidential.”
On Friday, he said, “We will continue to work on this case, just as we did with the Gilgo Four investigation. At this time, we will not comment on what, if any, suspects we have developed.”
Rex Heuermann, 59, of Massapequa Park, was detained and charged last month with the murders of three women. Their remains were found in December 2010 along Ocean Parkway, a few miles to the east, close to Gilgo Beach.
Numerous other remains, including those of Jane Doe No. 7, Peaches, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack, have also been found in the vicinity. It is yet unknown whether Heuermann is a suspect in these deaths.
