On Wednesday, Democrat Karen Bass won the race for mayor of Los Angeles against Republican Rick Caruso. She made history by holding the position for the first time as a Black woman.

When more than 70% of the ballots were counted, Bass had received close to 47,000 votes. She was working in her congressional office in Los Angeles when she heard the news of her triumph from an assistant. Caruso called the mayor-elect to congratulate her after withdrawing from the campaign.

Who Is Karen Bass?
Karen Bass is a well-known American politician. She has been in the news because she becomes the first Black woman to win the race for mayor of Los Angeles.
She was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 3, 1953. Her father, DeWitt Talmadge Bass, was a postal letter carrier, and her mother, Wilhelmina, is a housewife. She grew up in Los Angeles’s Fairfax and Venice neighborhoods.
Karen Brass did her schooling at Alexander Hamilton High School in 1971. Later, she attended San Diego State University to study philosophy. Later, she also enrolled in the physician assistant program at the USC Keck School of Medicine.
Later, she obtained a bachelor of science in health sciences from California State University, Dominguez Hills. She also got her master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California.
She was married to Jesus Lechuga from 1980 to 1986. She is the mother of Emilia Bass-Lechuga, a daughter who died in a car accident in 2006. Additionally, she was also a stepmother of Bass’s four stepchildren named Scythia, Omar, Yvette, and Ollin.
Career
Since 2011, Karen Bass has served as the 37th congressional district’s representative in California. Prior to this, she spent the previous six years—the final two as a speaker—in the California State Assembly.
For the 116th Congress (2019–2021), she was chosen to lead the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). In addition, she serves as head of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security as well as the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations.
Karen Brass was chosen to serve as the 67th speaker of the California State Assembly in 2008, making her the first African-American woman to hold that position in American history.
She was recognized in 2010 for her leadership throughout the Great Recession with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
