Kara Welsh, a gymnast from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was shot and died this past weekend in an off-campus residence, just days before the start of the fall semester.
A man has been taken into custody in relation to the death of Kara Welsh. In a message to the students on Friday, UW-Whitewater who is the Chancellor Corey King announced Welsh’s passing. He called her a “standout member of the Warhawk gymnastics team.”

According to the Wisconsin-Whitewater school’s athletic department, 21-year-old Kara Welsh from Plainfield was studying business management and was a national gymnastics champion. Last year, she had won the national title on the vault at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship.
Kara was born to Tom and Nancy and had a sibling named Kaeli. Her parents have setup a fundraiser after her demise.
After a report of a person found dead, police were called on Friday to an apartment off Main Street in Whitewater, Wisconsin. This location is roughly 50 miles west of Milwaukee, as per a news release from Whitewater Police.

They discovered a woman there with multiple gunshot wounds who they later identified as Kara Welsh. Welsh knew the 23-year-old male who was also in the residence, according to the police but his identity hasn’t been revealed as of now.
“Through investigation, it was determined that leading up to the shooting, an altercation had occurred between the two,” police said.
The university mentioned that Kara was a talented individual. The department also highlighted that Welsh always performed well in high pressure situations.
She had four of the top eight vault scores in the program’s history.
As per the chancellor of UW-Whitewater, Kara Welsh will be remembered on Tuesday with the university’s flag flying at half-staff. Counselling services are now available to all students, staff, and professors at the institution. Students who want more support or flexibility will receive it.

Welsh and the 23-year-old’s connection has not been revealed in the release by police but the two knew each other. While some reports online claim she was killed by her boyfriend Chad Richards, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
Welsh was heading into her senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she was majoring in management and was on the school’s Warhawk gymnastics team.
According to authorities, the suspect was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Walworth County Jail. The Walworth County District Attorney’s Office has been asked to file charges of first-degree homicide, disorderly behaviour while armed by the police, and endangering safety by using a deadly weapon.
