However, the visit quickly turned into a political battleground when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised objections, questioning how an alleged promoter of beef consumption gained entry into a temple where non-Hindus are traditionally prohibited. Jatin Mohanty, Odisha BJP general secretary, demanded the arrest of both Kamiya Jani and VK Pandian, a prominent Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader, citing a violation of temple norms and sentiments.
BJP’s calls for arrest
Jatin Mohanty alleged that Jani’s presence in the temple hurt the sentiments of Jagannath devotees and accused her of promoting beef consumption. The BJP also claimed that a video camera, prohibited by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), was used on the premises.
These allegations prompted the BJP to demand the registration of a case under IPC Section 295 A against both Jani and Pandian for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
In response to the brewing controversy, Kamiya Jani took to her Instagram story, asserting her commitment to promoting Indian culture and heritage. She clarified that the accusations of her promoting beef were unfounded, emphasizing her role as an Indian visiting significant religious sites across the country. Jani’s statement aimed to dispel any misconceptions surrounding her visit to the Jagannath Temple.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration swiftly responded to the claims regarding the use of a camera on temple premises. Via a statement on social media, they declared the allegation baseless, inviting anyone with evidence to present it for investigation.
