Netflix is frequently praised for its enormous selection of various non-fiction content, whether it be in the form of series or feature-length works.

Where is Kai Lawrence now today 2023 and what happened to Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker

Happily, 2023 is predicted to be a strong year for fans of documentaries, and Netflix has already launched it with The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker. The documentary’s title alone might bring to mind a popular video that went viral online in 2013.

The movie delves into the widely shared footage of a hitchhiker by the name of Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, who revealed his identity as Kai to a California local news reporter during an interview. He claims in the interview that he used a hatchet to smack Jett Simmons McBride in the head after he started hitting bystanders on the street.

The documentary investigates what transpired following this widely shared interview, though.

What Happened To Kai Lawrence And Where Is He Now?

According to reports, Kai Lawrence is currently incarcerated in the Trenton facility of the New Jersey State Prison after being given a 57-year prison term in April 2019.

According to The Sun, he encountered 73-year-old Joseph Galfy in Times Square, and a jury convicted him guilty of killing him in the first degree. Lawrence claimed he killed the man in self-defence after being invited to stay in his guest room.

After becoming an internet phenomenon and being hailed by many as an unlikely hero, Lawrence was ultimately indicted. The four-week trial came to an end with the guilty verdict.

Union County Prosecutor

Union County Prosecutor Michael A. Monahan reportedly gave the interview following the trial and Lawerence’s punishment. He said, “This was a brutal, vicious, senseless crime and we are pleased that the interests of justice have been served. We sincerely thank the jury for their service and hope that today’s verdict brings some measure of solace to Mr Galfy’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Lawrence has made several unsuccessful attempts to have the sentence vacated. The most recent denial of an appeal occurred in August 2021.
