Kaamya Karthikeyan, age 16 from the state of Mumbai achieved a global record by being the second-youngest climber of the Mount Everest ( 8,849 metres)
Kaamya Karthikeyan and her navy officer father, Commander S. Karthikeyan, reached the summit of Mount Everest on Monday. On X, the Indian Navy commemorated this achievement. The Indian Navy also shared a message of gratitude on X. They wished her well in her ambition to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents and commended her on her “immense courage & fortitude.”

The 16-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan is enrolled in class 12 at Mumbai’s Navy Children School. Kaamya was inspired by her father’s love of mountaineering to start trekking at the age of three.
Kaamya Karthikeyan started 2016 with an expedition and soon advanced to more challenging climbs, such as those to Roopkund Lake (16,400 feet), Kedarkantha Peak (13,500 feet), and Har-ki Dun (13,500 feet). At the age of thirteen, Kaamya became the second-youngest female in history to accomplish the feat of hiking to the Everest Base Camp (17,600 feet) in May 2017.
2019 saw Kaamya successfully cross the Sar Pass (13,850 feet) in Himachal Pradesh and conquer the fabled Bhrigu Lake (14,100 feet). Not long after her hike up Mt Mentok Kangri II (20,544 feet), Kaamya rode a bike from Leh to the highest motorable pass in the world, Khardung La. In February 2020, she then summited Mount Aconcagua, one of the highest peaks outside of Asia.
Kaamya has now given the 7 Summits Challenge her whole attention. Her next objective is to summit Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica in December, when she hopes to become the youngest female climber of all seven continents’ highest peaks.
She has already accomplished six peaks in the challenge. In addition to appearing on the well-known radio programme Mann ki Baat, hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she was awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in 2021.
The 16-year-old is a skilled musician who has graduated from Trinity School of Music’s Grade 2 guitar programme and Grade 5 piano programme. She is also proficient in both Western and Carnatic voice, as well as Bharatanatyam dancing.
