Ujjal Bhuyan speaks out against Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest
Renowned Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan on Friday spoke out against the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. He stated that the timing of the arrest while questioning the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) decision, to arrest him after a 22-month-long gap, ever since the initial filing of the FIR back in August 2022. Moreover, Ujjal stated how the grounds of arrest also do not satisfy the test of necessity to justify.
He stated:
I fail to understand the great hurry and urgency on the part of the CBI to arrest the appellant when he was on the cusp of release in the ED case.”
Ujjal Bhuyan bio
Ujjal Bhuyan is a judge of the Supreme Court of India who was born on August 2, 1964, in Guwahati. He is currently 60 years old, has a height of 5 feet 5 inches and he is a former chief justice of the Telangana High Court. Ujjal has also previously served as a judge of the Bombay High Court and the Gauhati High Court.
His father, Suchendra Nath Bhuyan was a Senior Advocate and a former Advocate General of Assam while his mother was named Subhadra Saikia. He also has sisters named Shagata, Anulekha and Jyoti. While he’s married and has a daughter as well, their names aren’t known.
Ujjal retires from the SC on 1 August, 2029.
Education
Ujjal Bhuyan did his schooling in Don Bosco High School, Guwahati, before attending Cotton College in Guwahati. He later obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from Government Law College in Guwahati. Following which he obtained his Master of Laws degree from the Gauhati University.
Career
Ujjal Bhuyan joined the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on March 20, 1991. He eventually became a designated as senior advocate by Gauhati High Court on September 6, 2010. The following year, he was appointed as an additional advocate general, Assam on July 21, 2011. Ujjal later got appointed as an additional judge to the Gauhati High Court on October 17, 2011, following which he became a permanent judge on March 20, 2013.
After serving there for several years, Ujjal got transferred as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2019. Ujjal Bhuyan then joined the Telangana High Court in October 2021 as a judge, and got elevated as chief justice the following year in June. He was most recently appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India by President Droupadi Murmu in 2023.
He was also the Executive Chairman of Mizoram State Legal Services Authority and was closely associated with the Judicial Academy, Assam and National Law University, Guwahati.
