On Friday, Justice Rohit B. Deo, a judge on the Bombay High Court, announced his resignation. Justice Deo also reportedly stated that he could not compromise on his self-respect, according to a lawyer who was present in the courtroom at the high court’s Nagpur bench.

The lawyer cited Justice Deo as saying in court, “To those of you who are in the court, I sincerely apologise.” You were reprimanded because I want you to get better. I’m sorry to inform you that I have filed my resignation. You are all like family to me, and I don’t want to hurt anyone. Working against my self-respect is not an option.”

On Friday, Justice Deo told reporters that he had resigned for personal reasons and had sent a letter of resignation to the Indian President.

Who Is Rohit Deo?

Justice Rohit B Deo is a judge of the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur division. When he served as Maharashtra’s advocate general in June 2017, Justice Deo was appointed to a second judgeship.

He was upgraded to the position of permanent judge in April 2019. He was expected to retire from his position on December 4, 2025. 

Some Well Known Cases Of Justice Rohit Deo

As part of the high court’s two-judge bench last year, Justice Deo overturned Gokalkonda Naga Saibaba’s conviction and life term. The reason for this was the use of shoddy paperwork and bad procedures by the trial court.

The Supreme Court overturned Saibaba’s acquittal in April of this year and referred the case back to the Nagpur bench for new deliberations. Additionally, the top court had urged the high court to reach a decision on the matter in four months.

Last week, Justice Deo blocked the implementation of a Maharashtra government Resolution (order) on January 3. The resolution gave the state the authority to drop legal actions brought by the revenue department over the unauthorised removal of minor minerals by contractors working on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Motorway.

Lalan Kishore Singh, a gambler, complained to him in a plea in January about a notice the Nagpur Police had given him. After submitting an RTI Act request for information about the security measures in place at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur, the daily wager was called in for questioning. 

In court, the government’s attorney apologised to the petitioner and gave the jury assurance that the police would not pursue further charges against him. According to Bar and Bench, the Court dismissed the petition in light of this declaration.

Justice Deo took offence to the strange and degrading punishments meted out by police officers when implementing COVID-19 lockdowns in May 2020. According to Bar and Bench, the court had ordered that no extralegal means or sanctions should be used to enforce the lockdown.
