Justice N Kotiswar Singh started off as an attorney at the Supreme Court. He thereafter moved his practice to the High Court in Guwahati.

Today, the Central government announced the nomination of the Supreme Court’s first justice, who comes from the northeastern state of Manipur. The first judge from Manipur to serve on the Supreme Court is Justice N Kotiswar Singh.

On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of the two judges. When the two are sworn in, the top court will operate with its full complement of 34 judges.

Judge N Kotiswar Singh was born in Imphal, Manipur, on March 1, 1963. Prior to moving to the Guwahati High Court, he temporarily practiced before the Supreme Court of India.

He was born to N Gomati Devi and the late Justice N Ibotombi Singh of the Guwahati High Court, who had previously held the position of Manipur’s first Advocate General.

He finished his education in Purulia, West Bengal, at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith. Delhi University awarded him a law degree in 1986.

Justice Kotiswar Singh career

In 2007, Justice N Kotiswar Singh was named Manipur’s advocate general. In October 2011, he was named a judge of the Guwahati High Court. In 2018, he was moved to the Manipur High Court after it was established. On three separate instances, Justice Singh presided over the Guwahati High Court as acting chief justice.

Justice Singh was named chief justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in February 2023.

Just a few days had passed since the SC Collegium on July 11 recommended Justices Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan for elevation. In endorsing both justices, the collegium emphasized the value of diversity on the bench.

The Supreme Court will have 34 judges on its roster when Justices Singh and Mahadevan take the oath of office. Justice Singh will be the first Judge from Manipur to be appointed as a Judge of Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the SC stated that Justice Mahadevan “belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu” and that “His appointment will bring diversity to the Bench.”
