Amid the commotion over nameplates on shops, the Supreme Court of India has issued a significant ruling on Monday, Jul 22.
For the unfamiliar, the Supreme Court temporarily halted the order and stated that shop owners are not required to disclose their names.
The order was passed by a bench of two judges, who were hearing a petition filed by an NGO. Additionally, notices have been issued to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh by the Supreme Court of India.

What Did the Supreme Court Say?
The Supreme Court declared that displaying nameplates outside shops is voluntary and cannot be enforced and furthermore emphasized that it is not necessary for the shop owner’s name to be displayed outside the shop.
However, it is mandatory to indicate whether the shop offers vegetarian or non-vegetarian food. The court was hearing a petition by the NGO “Association for Protection of Civil Rights.”

About Justice Hrishikesh Roy
For the curious, Justice Hrishikesh Roy was born on February 1, 1960. After completing his early education, he moved to Delhi to study law. He enrolled at the Campus Law Centre of Delhi University and graduated with an LL.B. in 1982.
Interestingly, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and the current Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, were classmates at the Campus Law Centre, both belonging to the 1982 batch.

After completing his law degree, Justice Hrishikesh Roy started practicing law. He practiced for a long time at the Gauhati High Court and the Delhi High Court.
In October 2006, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court and later became a permanent judge there. He was then transferred to the Kerala High Court as the Acting Chief Justice and subsequently became the 35th Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
In 2019, Justice Hrishikesh Roy was transferred to the Supreme Court. Few people know that Justice Hrishikesh Roy also has an interest in filmmaking.
He has made a few films titled “Shako” and “Apne Ajnabi,” which focus on legal aid awareness. His film “Shako” is frequently shown in various mediation programs. He is set to retire on 31 January, 2025.
