According to various reports, while Gangopadhyay hasn’t finalized which political party to choose, he could possibly join the BJP.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay bio, age, and education
Abhijit Gangopadhyay is an Indian high court judge who was born in 1962, in Kolkata to a lawyer. He is currently 62 years old. Abhijit recently chose to quit his job as a judge and join a political party. Gangopadhyay obtained his early education from Mitra Institution, a Bengali-medium school in Kolkata. After completing his high school¸, he started studying law at Hazra Law College in 1979. During his time in college, he acted in Bengali theatre and was part of a theatre group called “Amitra Chanda.”
Abhijit Ganguly was born in a Hindu lawyer family in Calcutta and his father was a famous lawyer of the Calcutta High Court and his mother was a housewife.
He became a permanent judge on 30 July 2020 and on 3 March 2024, he announced that he would be resigning from his post on 5 March 2024 and he is willing to join politics. He further added that, for the remainder of days as judge, he would not do any judicial work and remove the cases that are listed with him.
His offiical retirement date was in August 2024.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay career
Abhijit Gangopadhyay started out his career as a West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) A-grade officer. He was initially posted to North Dinajpur, in West Bengal, but soon left the job to start practicing as a state advocate in the Calcutta High Court. He soon joined the High Court as an additional judge on May 2, 2018. Two years later, on July 30, 2020, he became a permanent judge on the Calcutta HC.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay past cases
Abhijit Gangopadhyay has had a series of major cases in his career in the past. Back in August 2022, he got involved in a heated discussion with a section of lawyers of the Calcutta HC about a hearing regarding the recruitment scam. Justice Gangopadhyay allegedly allowed several journalists present in the courtroom to record the entire hearing.
Later in September 2022, he directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) to replace the illegally appointed school teachers with eligible candidates on the waiting list. The following year, in April 2023, Gangopadhyay gave an interview to news channel ABP Ananda about Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee despite hearing a case concerning Banerjee at that time.
